June 8 - June 9, 2009

The planning committee for the Nanotechnology Health & Safety Forum (NHSF) was pleased at the forum's success. Here are just a few comments we received from those who attended:

"Beginning with Kenneth Dawson, ending with Jim Hutchison... I was inspired. Well done."

"The diverse and high level of experts who presented information to proactively
and responsibly take this science into the future was truly incredible!"

"The key-note speakers were excellent and a pleasure to hear. Without this forum,
their opinion would not be heard."

"[The NHSF was a] wonderful mixture of academics, insurance, industry, legal, and
      standards groups and their recommendations."

Skip Rung, President and Executive Director of the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI), provided the forum's closing remarks, and has summarized the biggest take-away ideas from NHSF via his blog on Nanotechnology Now.

The NHSF was sponsored by Battelle, Day Pitney LLP, Porter Wright Morris & Arthur LLP, Keller & Heckman LLP, Intertox, Inc., the Safer Nanomaterials and Nanomanufacturing Initiative (SNNI), Riddell Williams, P.S., the University of Washington, the University of Oregon, and Oregon State University, and focused on occupational and environmental health and safety standards of nanotechnology.

Attendees of the NHSF walked away with important insights and answers about the following topics:

  • The EHS Progress Report: today's status and tomorrow's next steps
  • International Standards: developing a timeline & milestones
  • Navigating Regulations: encouraging dialogue between Europe, Asia, and the U.S.
  • Safety Guidelines: state of the science and recommended occupational safety guidelines for working with nanomaterials
  • Managing Risk: the insurance industry perspective
  • What's New: current activities of innovative nano-manufacturers

Throughout two information packed days, NHSF explored the science of nanotechnology, government regulations, insurance and risk management, and the roles of corporations and non-profit organizations as related to the future of nanotechnology.

The NHSF coincided with the first U.S.-hosted meeting of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) 229 Nanotechnologies, which took place June 8-12, 2009.
